Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roads Projects.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

691 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the by-laws or regulations on the proximity of a bypass or road to residential houses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19994/00]

As stated in the national development plan, 2000-06, particular care is to be taken in the route selection and design of national road projects so as to minimise the impact on local communities, to bypass sensitive areas and to minimise the impact on flora and fauna and visual intrusion. All road projects in the NDP likely to have significant effects on the environment are or will be subject to formal environmental impact assessment. This matter is not governed by by-laws or regulations.
