Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Denis Naughten

Question:

701 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans he has to provide additional funding for Roscommon County Council to raise roads prone to flooding in line with the submission made to his Department by the county council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20361/00]

My Department received a submission from Roscommon County Council on 10 April 2000 seeking additional funding for raising of roads affected by flooding. The Department responded on 13 April 2000 stating that local authorities should set aside a contingency sum from their own resources supplemented by State grants for the carrying out of remedial works arising as a result of flooding and storm damage.

I recently announced that an additional £235,000 was being made available to Roscommon County Council for class III county roads. I am requesting the county council to report on the situation in relation to flood affected roads in the light of this additional funding.
