Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

869 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will immedi ately sanction the siting of closed circuit television cameras at Main Street, Portlaoise, County Laois, as a crime prevention measure in view of the opening later in 2000 of the new midlands prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19416/00]

There is no record in my Department of any application being received for a Garda CCTV system in Main Street, Portlaoise.

I have also been advised by the Garda authorities that no application has been received by the advisory committee – established by the Garda Commissioner to examine CCTV applications – for a Garda CCTV system in Main Street.

All applications for Garda CCTV systems must be prepared in co-operation with the local Garda district and divisional officers and receive their full support. They may then be considered by the advisory committee which will make a recommendation to me in this regard.
