Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Nora Owen

Question:

972 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation when he will make a decision on the lottery application for a voluntary group (details supplied) in County Mayo which is seeking to erect a statue in a cemetery; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20133/00]

Following the public advertising of the sport capital programme for 2000, in excess of 1,600 applications were received, including an application from the organisation in question. All of the applications were assessed in accordance with the assessment criteria outlined in the guidelines, terms and conditions governing the programme. Following this assessment the organisation in question was unsuccessful and this decision, together with a copy of the assessment conducted on the application, was conveyed to the organisation by letter dated 17 July 2000.

Under the guidelines, terms and conditions of the sports capital programme, it is a requirement that "Projects must be directly related to the provision of sport and recreation facilities". As this key requirement was not met in relation to the application in question it was not possible to assist this organisation.
