Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

168 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the directives issued under the treaties establishing the European Communities of which any provision coming under the auspices of his Department has not yet been transposed into law; if in each case such transposition will be effected by Bill or statutory instrument; if transposition is overdue in any case; if so, the steps taken by the European Commission by way of enforcement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19644/00]

In so far as my Department is concerned, there is a number of directives which require the provision of statistics by the Central Statistics Office, which comes under my Department's aegis. There is no obligation to transpose these directives into national law. However, statutory instruments have been made under the Statistics Act, 1993, when considered necessary to collect the data needed to ensure compliance with the relevant directive.
