Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

1020 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science if decisions in relation to staffing of schools, particularly resource teachers and classroom assistants, will be brought forward to enable schools to begin term with their full complement of staff in view of the fact that the numbers of students and students with disabilities are known almost a year in advance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19864/00]

The in-quota staffing of primary schools is determined by the enrolment on 30 September of the previous year. Schools are informed well in advance what their staffing quota for the new school year will be.

In relation to the allocation of resource teaching and special needs assistant posts, every effort is made to inform schools of their allocation of such posts as early as possible. However, assessment reports required by my Department, to consider fully the needs of children attending a school, are not always readily available. In addition, the special educational needs of some children only come to light during the course of the year and my Department makes every effort to respond to such instances speedily.

I can assure the Deputy that my Department is aware of the importance of processing applications for such supports in an efficient and speedy manner.

Question:

1021 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of resource teachers in County Donegal in the school years 1999 and 2000; the locations and the number of schools that they serve; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19865/00]

There are currently 16 full-time resource teaching posts allocated to primary schools in County Donegal. This is the same level as obtained at the end of the 1999-2000 school year. The posts in question serve 62 schools in total. Thirteen posts are shared. The following table sets out the locations of the base schools and number of other schools served by each resource teacher.
