Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Gormley

Question:

1030 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received correspondence from persons (details supplied) in Dublin 5; if he will respond to their concerns; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19946/00]

I am aware of the correspondence referred to by the Deputy and of the concerns raised by the parents of the children involved. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department sanctioned 7.5 hours Irish sign language tuition per week throughout the summer period for the families in question. In addition, Irish sign language teaching support of one hour per week after school has been sanctioned for these families for the current school year. I have asked my Department's inspectorate to review these arrangements and a reply will be sent to the correspondents referred to as soon as possible.
