Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John McGuinness

Question:

1035 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction a computer for a person (details supplied) who is 13 years of age and has cancer in view of the fact she has missed primary school since January 2000 and is now going into secondary school; and the way in which assistance can be given to this family to support their daughter. [19951/00]

My Department operates a scheme for the provision of grants for schools towards the purchase of equipment for the use of pupils with certain disabilities or communication difficulties. The purpose of the scheme is to provide such pupils with equipment of direct educational benefit to them. Computer equipment and software are among the items that may be provided. Under the terms of the scheme the school authorities make an application in respect of an individual student.

An application for computer equipment was recently received from the school attended by the pupil in question. The application will be considered by officials of my Department as a matter of priority.
