John McGuinness

Question:

1037 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress made to date in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny further to Parliamentary Question No. 401 of 16 November 1999; if he will review the case in view of a person's (details supplied) claim that no advice, information or help was offered by the Department contrary to the information given in the reply to the aforementioned question; if his Department received a request for information on the case from a psychologist based in London and acting for the family; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19953/00]

The person concerned, a 26 year old man who left second level education in 1992, did receive advice from my Department. A psychologist from my Department visited the man in question and his mother in their home on five occasions in April and May 1999. A psychological assessment was carried out and feedback on the findings was given to the man. Information and advice were offered on possible options for his further education.

In May 2000 a request for a report was received by the psychologist from a London based psychologist acting for the family. The report has been sent to the psychologist. This man has received substantial information, advice and sup port from the National Educational Psychological Service and is no longer in the formal education system.
