Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

1042 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science if Corrandulla National School, County Galway, will be allowed a full-time remedial teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20015/00]

In September 1999, the remedial teaching service was extended to all primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were advised that they could seek such support where they could demonstrate a need for the service.

A further 15 remedial teachers were sanctioned in the current school year to improve the service in schools with very high enrolments.

The school referred to by the Deputy has a remedial teacher post which it shares with three other local schools. I have asked my Department's inspectorate to keep the needs of the school under review.
