Vol. 523 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

147 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of gardaí on duty at normal given times; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21004/00]

The number of gardaí on duty at any one time depends on a variety of factors including the needs of the situation and the nature of work of particular units. It is not possible, therefore, to give any precise figures.

However, I am informed by the Garda authorities that a large proportion of Garda personnel are rostered in such a way that, on average, about 20% to 25% of that personnel – somewhat higher at times of greater need and lower at other times – is rostered to work at any given time during a 24 hour period. The number of gardai serving this week is 11,607.

Question:

152 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of gardaí on duty for each shift in the towns of Leixlip, Celbridge, Maynooth, Kilcock, Naas and Clane in County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21009/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, for operational reasons, it is not policy to publish the number of members rostered for duty at particular times in each Garda station.

I am advised that Celbridge, Clane, Maynooth and Naas are in the district of Naas. Kilcock and Leixlip are in the districts of Ashbourne and Lucan respectively.

The current Garda personnel strength, all ranks, for Naas, Ashbourne and Lucan districts is as follows: Naas 113; Ashbourne 70; Lucan 152.

I am also advised by the Garda authorities that station strengths are augmented from within each division as the need arises.
