Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Car Test.

Michael Ring

Question:

146 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans he has to harmonise the national car testing of vehicles in line with the MOT tests carried out in other European countries. [21054/00]

Roadworthiness testing of cars is harmonised throughout the EU in accordance with Directive 96/96/EC. The directive sets out the items to be tested and for two items, brakes and emissions, sets minimum standards. Member states are free to test for additional items and to set their own standards provided the minimum standards for brakes and emissions are met.
