Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Denis Naughten

Question:

192 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress to date made by Dúchas to improve access to the historic site at Rath Cruachain, County Roscommon; the position regarding the development of this historic site; the future proposals which Dúchas has for this site; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21205/00]

There are a total of eight monuments, or groups of monuments, in the Rathcroghan area in State ownership or guardianship. The role of Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, in relation to Rath Cruachain has been to endeavour to improve access to these monuments. This is being progressed in consultation with landowners and Roscommon County Council. There are no proposals in the short-term to undertake archaeological excavations.
