Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Height Requirements.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

201 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he will reduce the qualifying height for female recruitment into the Garda Síochána; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21212/00]

The Government recently approved my proposal to establish a Garda Síochána physical competence test review group to look at the question of pre-entry physical competence tests for applicants wishing to join the Garda Síochána. Part of its remit will be to look at the validity of the present height requirements. I am of the view that legitimate questions have been raised as to the use of the present height requirement as a selection criterion in the context of current best practice in recruitment.

The review group – comprising representatives of my Department, the Garda Síochána and one independent expert – will advise on physical competence tests and the relevancy of the height requirement and report back to me as soon as possible.
