Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prevention of Bonfires.

Tony Gregory

Question:

202 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda authorities in the Bridewell, Dublin 7 will take steps to ensure that the senior citizen complex (details supplied) in Dublin 7 will not be used as a site for a bonfire again this year at Halloween. [21214/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a policing plan for the Bridewell area will be in operation over the Halloween period. St. Brichin's park will be included in this plan and will receive attention from both beat and mobile patrols over this period.

As part of the district plan, members are instructed to pay attention to any stock piling of bonfire materials in the week before Halloween. Any collections of such material are immediately reported to Dublin Corporation's cleansing department, whose responsibility it is to remove the bonfire.

In addition, I am informed that local neighbourhood policing unit members will discuss personal safety at Halloween with schoolchildren as part of their Garda schools programme visits. Also, a patrol van will be manned for the Halloween period to specifically target crime, vandalism and disorder in the district. This year's policing plan will be run in conjunction with Operation Oíche.
