Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sex Offenders Treatment Programme.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

207 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the proposed sex offenders treatment programme is expected to be in place in the Curragh prison, County Kildare; the number of offenders it will provide for; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21310/00]

A working group chaired by the Director General of the Irish Prisons Service and comprising representatives of all the relevant agencies and prison disciplines has been oversee ing the introduction of a number of interventions for sex offenders in the Curragh which accommodates approximately 100 sex offenders.

A thinking skills programme has already been introduced in the Curragh. An intensive sex offenders group treatment programme, drawing particularly on successful offender participants in the thinking skills programme will be introduced in November this year. This programme will cater for up to ten offenders at one time and take ten to 11 months to complete. It is modelled on the successful group treatment programme which has been running in Arbour Hill since 1994.
