Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Austin Currie

Question:

266 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary schools currently awaiting refurbishment and the provision of extra facilities in the constituencies of Dublin Mid-West and Dublin West; the nature of these facilities in each case; when the work will be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21304/00]

My Department does not have statistics on the number of schools awaiting refurbishment and the provision of extra facilities in the areas in question.

The rate of progress to construction, for capital projects, depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project, site issues, the time required to undertake architectural planning, the volume of other projects being dealt with by design teams and by the planning and building unit of my Department, the period of time required for the granting of planning permission and a fire certificate and the outcome of the tender competition.

These processes are by their nature complex and can take a considerable period of time to complete. Delays can arise at any point in the process, consequently it is not possible to say when projects being processed at present will proceed to construction. However, every effort is made by my Department to minimise delays and to ensure that construction is started in the shortest period of time possible.

In all cases, the school authorities are informed of progress on individual projects.

The information, in the format requested by the Deputy, is not available in my Department. However, I will be pleased to provide him with information regarding any specific school building project.
