Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John McGuinness

Question:

273 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will have arrangements made for a special assessment of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny who suffers from a mild form of autism and wants to continue full-time education in an appropriate mainstream school in Kilkenny city; if meetings have taken place without the child or parents of the child being represented and consisting of officials only; if so, the decisions taken and their basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21399/00]

The national educational psychological service – NEPS – is an executive agency of my Department. It has responsibility for providing an educational psychological service to all children and young people attending schools and other educational institutions. It has a particular remit to support pupils with special educational needs.

I am arranging for NEPS to provide me with details of the case in question and I shall advise the Deputy of the outcome.
