Question:

64 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will review the performance of the Irish consulate in Pakistan; if he has satisfied himself that the consulate is in a position to carry out its duties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21435/00]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 59 and 64 together.

The number of visas issued to holders of Pakistani passports up to 6 October this year was 2,100, of which 133 have been issued by the consulate in Karachi. A new Honorary Consul in Karachi was appointed earlier this year and the consulate there has been accepting applications for visas since 22 June 2000. The new office is operating satisfactorily under the supervision of the embassy in Tehran, which is accredited to Pakistan. For a few weeks after applications for visas began to be accepted, incorrect charges were being levied for communications and courier service costs but the correct charges are being levied since August. I am not aware of any problems being experienced by applicants for visas and I am satisfied that the consulate is in a position to carry out its duties.
