Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disposal of Animal Carcases.

Paul McGrath

Question:

76 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the facilities provided by his Department to dispose of fallen animals in a safe and environmentally friendly manner; the moneys available from his Department to private companies, individuals or groups to subsidise the safe disposal of fallen animals; and the approved disposal facilities available in County Westmeath in this regard. [21031/00]

At present a dedicated rendering plant is available for the disposal of specified risk material and fallen animals. In addition there are 112 licensed hauliers and a network of 45 licensed fallen animal collectors nationally for the collection and transport of specified risk material or fallen animals. A preferential rate for the fallen animal collectors sending their material to the dedicated plant has been in operation for some time. There are currently two approved fallen animal collectors operating in County Westmeath and a number of other licensed operators in adjoining counties who provide a similar service.
