A detailed breakdown of the moneys committed for overseas development aid projects and funding for non-governmental organisations in central and southern America in 1999 is set out in the annual report of Ireland Aid for 1999 which is available in the Library.
A table showing the allocations from January 2000 to date follows. A total of £704,000 has been spent on rehabilitation assistance and emergency assistance programmes to date, however, it is anticipated that Ireland Aid will spend a total of £1000,000 on rehabilitation assistance in central America this year, in the aftermath of hurricane Mitch.
A total of £1,053,326 has been allocated to NGOs under the co-financing and block grant schemes in 2000 for projects in the region and £425,001 has been committed to NGOs for projects under the human rights and democratisation budget 2000. In addition, funding of £100,000, £50,000 in 1999 and £50,000 in 2000, was provided to the United Nations Volunteers in support for the Ombudsman's Office, Peru.
