Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax.

Seán Power

Question:

193 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Finance the number of vehicles sold in the first nine months of 2000; the resultant revenue accrued to the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21505/00]

It is assumed what the Deputy has in mind is the number of vehicles registered in the first nine months of 2000 and the amount of revenue collected by way of vehicle registration tax – VRT – and VAT.

I have been informed by the Revenue commissioners that the number of motor vehicles, new and used, registered for VRT purposes in the first nine months of this year is 307,289 of which 219,959 are new cars. The revenue accrued to the State during that period, which arose in the main from registrations effected between December 1999 and August 2000 in respect of VRT and transactions occurring between November 1999 and August 2000 in respect of VAT, is £1,136 million. This figure is made up of £730 million from VRT and an estimated £406 million VAT.
