Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

214 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health and Children the conditions under which the chiropody service are provided for under the GMS scheme; if he will have considerations made into extending eligibility for such services to persons under 65 years of age; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21597/00]

The present position is that the health boards provide, under the GMS scheme, chiropody services through a panel of private practitioners on the basis of three treatments per annum to medical card holders over 65 years of age who require such a service. In exceptional circumstances where the patient requires additional treatment this is provided by the board. I am satisfied that the health boards are addressing this issue in line with their responsibilities.

I have no plans, at present, to introduce any changes in terms of amending or extending the scope of the chiropody service under the scheme.
