Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Class Sizes.

Ivor Callely

Question:

276 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science the primary class sizes in the Dublin area; the comparative figures for class sizes outside Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21250/00]

The average class size in primary schools in Dublin in the 1999-00 school-year was 26.1 pupils per class. The national average class size was 24.4 pupils per class.

The information is based on data submitted to my Department by the managerial authorities of primary schools.

The Deputy may be aware that a maximum class size guideline of 29:1 operates for schools in areas designated as disadvantaged and a 30:1 ratio applies for ordinary schools.
