Question:

322 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of drop-outs after one year for the academic year ending May 2000 for students offered a place under the higher education links scheme in each of the academic institutions (details supplied). [21747/00]

Question:

323 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of students who failed after year one for the academic year ending May 2000 for students offered a place under the higher education links scheme in each of the academic institutions (details supplied). [21748/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 322 and 323 together.

I understand the Deputy's question relates to the arrangement whereby students who have attained NCVA level 2 awards can progress to designated certificate and diploma courses in the institutes of technology. Information in relation to the drop-out or failure rates for these students is not available in my Department.

A study on the general drop-out or failure rates in the institutes of technology is being carried out by the Educational Research Centre, St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra.
