Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Higher Education Institutions.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

84 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason he has not implemented the 1997 Government decision to establish the west Cork third level campus in Skibbereen, County Cork. [21233/00]

Cork Institute of Technology submitted proposals for outreach provision in Skibbereen on 12 June 1997. The proposals have been and continue to be the subject of discussions between my Department and the Department of Finance.

The issue of outreach centres was addressed in the final report of the technical working group on the review of outreach centres of higher education institutions which was published in April of this year.

I have already indicated that my plans are to strengthen the education base in regions which are not well served at present and to establish effective links with higher and third level institutions. In this context I have recently had top level discussions with representatives of the Church, local authorities and elected representatives in Wexford and Kilkenny as well as senior staff from the Institute of Technology, Carlow and the NUI, Maynooth.

I will address the proposals in relation to Skibbereen in the context of my overall approach to outreach centres.
