Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

97 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to devise training modules for secondary teachers who wish to teach in primary schools; the further plans he has to have those provided on line; if he will have considerations made into the merits of the proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21423/00]

As a response to a shortage in the supply of primary teachers, my Department requested the colleges of education to provide a postgraduate course to enable degree holders train as primary teachers. The duration of this course is 18 months. Eligible secondary teachers may apply for this course in the normal way.

The proposal being put forward by the Deputy would seem to suggest a course designed exclusively for secondary teachers. My Department has no plans to provide such a course.
