Vol. 523 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

98 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress to date on the establishment of a centre for deaf studies; the funding which has been provided in the current year; the specific funding commitment which he has given for the next five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21482/00]

I announced the establishment of the Irish centre for deaf studies in Trinity College Dublin on 30 June last. This centre will offer courses to improve communication between the deaf and hearing communities and to enhance the employment prospects for members of the deaf community.

I understand that Trinity College Dublin is examining the details and phasing of the recurrent costs associated with the setting up of the centre and are to revert to the higher education authority in this regard.
