Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cancer Treatment Services.

Austin Deasy

Question:

148 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress made in providing radiotherapy services at Waterford Regional Hospital, in order to save people the inconvenience and trauma of travelling considerable distances for treatment. [22709/00]

The planned development of cancer services nationally has been guided by the national cancer strategy which was published in November 1996. As part of the implementation of that strategy, it is planned to develop radiotherapy services at University College Hospital, Galway, to complement services already available from the other supra-regional centres at Cork and Dublin. I have established an expert group under the chairmanship of Professor Donal Hollywood to examine national radiotherapy requirements. The work of the group is ongoing and I expect to receive a report shortly.
