Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fire Safety.

Richard Bruton

Question:

150 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to an initiative on fire protection and safety in the home (details supplied) which offers a programme aimed at schools, active retirement groups and others and which has sought funding from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22414/00]

I have received a number of requests for sponsorship for this initiative. My Department has no funds at its disposal from which it could directly support such an initiative. However, the National Safety Council, which is responsible for promoting public awareness of fire safety, receives an annual grant from my Department towards the cost of its administration, safety education, publicity and awareness initiatives. The council also receives funding from the Irish Insurance Federation. The allocation of the funds available among its various services is a matter directly for the council. The request for funding in this instance was therefore forwarded to the council for its attention.
