Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

159 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the assistance he can give to a group (details supplied) in County Waterford in relation to the summer student job scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22507/00]

A student who wishes to participate in the students summer jobs scheme must make a formal application to my Department so that his or her eligibility can be determined in advance. If a student is eligible he or she is free to take part in the scheme with an approved sponsor. Under this year's scheme the closing date for receipt of such applications was 30 June.

The sponsor concerned was approved to take part in the scheme and it is understood that a number of students worked on a project during the summer months. However, none of these students applied to participate in the scheme and it is not possible to accept an application at this stage.
