Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Capitation Grants.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

195 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will outline, in regard to community and comprehensive schools for the current year or the most recent year for which figures are available, the current standard per capita grant paid to schools and disadvantaged schools respectively and the number of students in schools for which this grant is payable. [22542/00]

Comprehensive and community schools unlike voluntary secondary schools do not receive per capita grants. Instead, each school is given a budget based mainly on pupil numbers, but which also takes into account additional factors which vary from school to school such as disadvantaged status, age of buildings, size of school etc. In the school year 1999-2000, there were 50,698 pupils enrolled in comprehensive and community schools.
