Question:

196 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will outline, in regard to community and comprehensive schools for the current year or the most recent year for which figures are available, the level of support and the criteria for payment of grants for school secretaries and caretakers, the number of schools benefiting, the total number of caretakers and secretaries employed under such schemes and the total cost of each such scheme. [22543/00]

All 85 community and comprehensive schools have the services of a full-time secretary and caretaker. Additionally, schools with enrolments of 500 or more have a second caretaker and part-time secretarial assistance. Schools with enrolments of 750 or more have a second full time secretary.

The numbers sought by the Deputy relate to 1999 and are set out in tabular form.
