Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Foreign Elections.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

35 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the elections in Tanzania and Zanzibar. [22360/00]

Elections are scheduled to take place in Tanzania on 29 October. Ireland will send ten observers to the elections as part of an EU mission and arrangements for this are being co-ordinated by APSO. Ireland has also made a financial contribution of £110,000 to assist in the preparation of the elections.

Elections are also set to take place on the island of Zanzibar, which is part of the United Republic of Tanzania but has its own government responsible for internal matters. There are ongoing concerns at the political and human rights situation and, together with our EU partners, we have appealed to the Government of Tanzania to make certain that due respect is shown for the rights of all citizens in Zanzibar and to ensure that democratic procedures are fully respected in the preparation and organisation of the elections.
