Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - UN Sanctions.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

44 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will ensure that Ireland's position on the UN Security Council is used to bring about an end to economic sanctions which have brought such hardship to the people of Iraq and which at this stage are reinforcing the dictatorial position of Saddam Hussein. [22366/00]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to the priority question today. In particular, I restate my hope that further progress will have been made on this issue by the time we take our seat on the Security Council in January. As a member of the Council, we will consider the situation in Iraq both in the light of developments and also in line with the policy that I have outlined already.
