Vol. 524 No. 3

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

60 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the number of times he has sought to have Coillte Teoranta adhere to the Government's 1996 forest strategy which requires the planting of 20% broadleaves in view of the fact that the company has not planted more than 5% broadleaves in any of the years since 1996; and, if not, if he will do so now or give the grounds for the exemption of the company from this national policy. [22582/00]

Like others involved in afforestation, Coillte is aware of the national broadleaf target contained in the Government's strategic plan for forestry. Species selection is, of course, very much dependent on the particular location involved. As indicated yesterday in reply to a question by the Deputy, the national target of 20% broadleaves is being met.
