Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Taxi Licences.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

376 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, pending clarification of the recent judgment, he will return the power to issue taxi licences to Dublin Corporation in order that its planned 470 plate issue will proceed as quickly as possible. [23015/00]

Dublin Corporation is restrained, under a temporary injunction issued by the High Court in February 2000, from allocating any taxi licences pursuant to the Road Traffic (Public Service) (Amendment) Regulations, 2000, pending the determination of the application for judicial review in the case referred to in the question. As that determination has not yet been made, the allocation of new taxi licences by the corporation remains blocked.

I have already indicated my hope that the forthcoming determination of the High Court judicial review will lay the groundwork for the clarification of the legal basis for an efficient and customer friendly taxi service for Dublin that all parties want. I remain strongly convinced that public demand for taxis must be satisfied and I intend to work to ensure that this is done as quickly as possible.
