Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Juvenile Liaison Officers.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

437 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when it is proposed to appoint a juvenile liaison officer to the Garda Síochána in Athy, County Kildare. [23049/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities which are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel to individual areas that it is not envisaged that a juvenile liaison officer will be appointed to Athy Garda station in the near future.

I am also informed that, at present, there are three juvenile liaison officers in the Carlow-Kildare division – one in the juvenile liaison office at Newbridge Garda station; one in the juvenile liaison office at Naas Garda station and one in the juvenile liaison office at Carlow Garda station. The Athy area is covered by the juvenile liaison officer operating from Carlow Garda station.

I am further informed that the number of juvenile referral forms submitted to the national juvenile office from the Carlow-Kildare division in 1999 was 672. The number of referrals from Athy Garda station for the same year was 14. The number of referrals from Athy Garda station in 1998 was 48.
