Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

Enda Kenny

Question:

458 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of the £2 million being invested to promote sport and physical education; the schools to which allocations have been made; the amounts involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22842/00]

I presume the Deputy is referring to the new scheme of grants for the development of sports and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, which I announced last April. The grant will be used for coaching, mentoring and equipment.

It is anticipated that the grant will be paid annually on a calendar year basis. Schools designated as disadvantaged will receive a grant of £1,000 per year, while all other schools will receive £500.

No allocations have been made to schools to date. However, full details of the scheme are set out in a circular which will be forwarded to the schools in the very near future. Grants will issue automatically to all primary schools shortly afterwards, and there will be no necessity for schools to make a formal application for funding.
