Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Richard Bruton

Question:

496 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself with a situation in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 5 where, despite being designated disadvantaged, one teacher has to teach 33 children who include pupils from two different class levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23078/00]

The staffing of a primary school for a particular year is determined by reference to the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule. The staffing schedule is determined for a particular year following discussions with the managerial authorities and the INTO.

The current staffing of this particular school is a principal and six mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 195 as at 30 September 1999. The school also has the services of two teachers due to the school's disadvantaged status, two learning support teachers, and a shared home-school liaison teacher.

An inspector from my Department has confirmed that the school's enrolment is not in breach of the overall maximum class size guideline of 29. The arrangement of classes within the school is a matter for the board of management.
