Vol. 524 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Michael Noonan

Question:

516 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will ensure that a person (details supplied) in County Limerick is provided with a place in a second level school in Limerick; if he will have arrangements made to provide the person with a home-school allowance if there is a delay in the provision of a place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23213/00]

In general terms, enrolment in second level schools is the responsibility of the managerial authority of individual schools. My Department's main responsibility is to ensure that schools in an area can, between them, cater for all pupils seeking second level places in an area. This may result, however, in some pupils not obtaining a place in the school of their first choice.

My Department is actively working to find a suitable school placement for this student. I wish to assure the Deputy that should there be any delay in this regard home tuition will be sanctioned by my Department.
