Vol. 525 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public-Private Partnerships.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

66 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Finance the number of public-private partnerships which have been sanctioned by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23649/00]

In relation to the PPP pilot projects I would refer the Deputy to the national development plan. In summary the plan provides for £1.85 billion in private financing of PPPs under the economic infrastructure programme, including £1 billion for roads; £300 million for public transport and £550 million for environmental projects.

The sanctioning of individual PPP projects is a matter for the departments and agencies responsible for the relevant investment programmes. Notwithstanding significant progress in implementing the pilot PPP process, the programme is at an early stage of development. Two pilot projects in the education sector have reached the market with the first roads projects to do so in the coming weeks. The projects have not yet advanced to a point where the specific sanction of my Department is required in respect of expenditure commitments entered into under a PPP contract.
