Liam Lawlor

Question:

222 Mr. Lawlor asked the Taoiseach the total cost of the construction of the Liffey-side boardwalk which forms part of the millennium celebrations; the period for which the boardwalk will be open to the public; the hours per day of public access; the security provisions and costs for the boardwalk when not in public use; and whether additional public liability insurance will be required to cover any claims for accidents or other contingencies. [24656/00]

The Government, on the recommendation of the National Millennium Committee, approved the allocation of £2 million of millennium funding towards the cost of two flagship projects of Dublin Corporation, the Liffey of lights and the Liffey boardwalk.

This millennium funding is apportioned as follows: £500,000 towards the Liffey of lights project on the basis of an estimated total cost of £1.09 million and £1.5 million towards the boardwalk on the basis of an estimated total cost of £1.963 million. To date a total of £633,750 of this millennium funding has been drawn down for these projects.

The Liffey of lights projects was completed at the end of 1999 in time for the New Year's Eve celebrations. I understand from Dublin Corpor ation, which is responsible for both these projects, that the Liffey boardwalk is expected to be completed in early December.
All operational details in respect of these projects are solely a matter for Dublin Corporation and I have no function in this regard.
