Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pollution of River Liffey.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

254 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his officials have investigated the recent visible pollution of the River Liffey; if speculation is correct that the source of pollution originated from the Camac tributary; if South Dublin County Council has identified the nature of the pollutant; the person or persons responsible for the pollution; and if legal action will ensue. [24302/00]

The River Liffey is in the fisheries region of the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board. The board informs me that the incident to which the Deputy refers has had no adverse impact on fisheries. The board has been in contact with South Dublin County Council which is investigating the incident and the county council advises that a dye entered the river from a surface water drain. The county council has informed the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board that a prosecution will be instituted, if possible.
