Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Forestry Incentives.

Michael Ring

Question:

257 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans he has to ensure that all those in receipt of a forestry premium are paid at the same rate per acre. [24654/00]

The application for higher forestry incentives submitted to the European Com mission last year proposed increased premiums levels for those who planted under the Council Regulation 2090/92 as well as for those proposing to plant in the current season. Due to the protracted nature of the discussions with the Commission, I decided that the primary focus would be on securing increases which would have an impact on planting in the current season. The substantial increases announced on 6 March 2000 achieved that objective.

I and the Minister of State, Deputy Byrne, and our officials, have been involved in negotiations over the past months with the European Commission with a view to securing adequate premium increases for those who planted in earlier years. These negotiations are ongoing.
