Question:

403 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the reason his Department has refused to sanction a further language course at CMOD in Lansdowne House, Dublin 4 for civil servants in both Italian and Spanish; the numbers who took these courses in the past three years; if he will restore the courses involved in view of the fact that 2001 is deemed year of European languages; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The discontinuation of Spanish and Italian at the Language Training Centre arose from a recent review of the services provided by the centre. The outcome of this review, in which class sizes, student attendance and teacher requirements were considerations, was a decision to concentrate resources on French and German, in line with the centre's objective of equipping civil servants to operate more effectively in EU fora. The numbers who took these courses in the last three years are as follows:
