Written Answers. - Health Promotion.

Bernard Allen

Question:

478 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress that is being made in the development of the national programme for men's health, as outlined in his Department's National Health Promotion Strategy 2000-2005. [24114/00]

The Health Promotion Strategy 2000-2005 was published in July this year. Since that time, the health promotion unit has consulted with health boards in prioritising a phased implementation of the aims and objectives set out in the strategy. It is expected that research in the area of men's health – to inform the development of a plan for men's health – will be commissioned in the new year.

Question:

479 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the percentage of health spending on health promotion. [24115/00]

The budget of my Department for the current year is £4.066 billion, excluding capital funding of £231 million. The budget of the health promotion unit of my Department for the current year is £4.511 million. This represents 0.11% of total health spending. In addition to this each of the health boards now has a health promotion department with a dedicated budget.
