I propose to take Questions Nos. 485 and 486 together.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the total number of public hospital beds for each of the years in question. The data requested by the Deputy are set out in the following table. For the years 1970, 1980 and 1990 the figures refer to the total in-patient bed complement for all publicly-funded acute hospitals at 31 December for the given year. Since 1993 a bed designation exercise has been in operation under which beds in public hospitals are formally designated as public, private or non-designated on 1 January each year. In the year 2000, beds have been designated as follows: 9,030 public, 2,528 private and 769 non- designated. The total figure and population-based rate is show in the table below.
