Question:

562 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make the necessary resources available for the proposed development of geriatric services at the South Infirmary Victoria Hospital, Cork. [24427/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 560 to 562, inclusive, together.

In August 2000, following discussions with the Mercy Hospital and the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital, my Department agreed to provide a capital grant of £1.643 million for the further phased development of services for older people in these hospitals, respectively a 12 bed assessment unit and a 40 bed rehabilitation unit.

Approval was given by my Department for the joint appointment of a consultant physician in geriatric medicine, with support staff for both agencies. My Department is aware of the need for a second joint appointment of a consultant physician in geriatric medicine. I understand that the agencies are in the process of making a formal application for approval.

Questions Nos. 563 to 570, inclusive, taken with Question No. 451.
