Vol. 525 No. 2

Written Answers. - Transsexual Syndrome.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

577 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will make a statement on the condition known as gender dysphoria or transsexual syndrome; and the attitude his Department takes to funding of treatment in these cases. [24596/00]

The assessment and treatment of particular conditions is a matter for the clinical responsibility of the clinician concerned based on his or her clinical judgment. Like other illnesses every effort is made to provide the patient with appropriate services. Should treatment abroad be deemed necessary, it is a matter for the health board concerned to examine the circumstances of each individual case in accordance with established criteria.
